Surishaday, known as Suri for short, was born in Veracruz, Mexico, but raised in the vibrant cultural melting pot of Oakland, California, Suri embodies a unique blend of heritages. Fluent in Spanish, they possess a deep connection to their roots, while their upbringing in Oakland has instilled a spirit of open-mindedness and exploration. Their passions are diverse, encompassing literature and geology, reflecting a keen intellectual curiosity. When not immersed in books or admiring the intricacies of rocks, Suri can be found listening to the captivating tales of the Tooth and Claw podcast, or re-watching episodes of The Office, a testament to their appreciation for storytelling and humor.
Suri’s connection to the natural world deepened in their late 20s, a pivotal period marked by a profound realization of nature’s transformative power. This awakening sparked a fervent desire for adventure, leading to solo hiking expeditions and explorations across the United States. They have ventured into over 24 National Parks, as well as numerous state parks, each visit enriching their understanding of the diverse landscapes our country has to offer. Their experiences range from horseback riding through the dramatic terrain of Moab to scaling glaciers during the spring thaw, and navigating the snowy expanses of Alaska on a snowmobile. They have also stood in awe of bison in Yellowstone and The Tetons, respecting their wild nature from a safe distance. Yosemite, in particular, holds a special place in Suri’s heart, serving as a sanctuary where they can reconnect with nature and delve into the writings of John Muir.
With a solid foundation built upon more than eight years of experience as a Montessori teacher, working with children of varying ages, Suri has made a significant career shift. They are now channeling their passion for the outdoors and their pedagogical skills into a new endeavor: guiding others in nature. This transition reflects a desire to share their love for the environment and to foster a deeper understanding of its wonders. Suri’s goal extends beyond simply showcasing scenic vistas; they aim to inspire learning and cultivate a lasting appreciation for the natural world, ensuring that each adventure leaves a lasting impact.
