A Brief History of Los Angeles

The history of Los Angeles dates back hundreds of years when the region was first inhabited by Chumash and Tongva Indians. In the 1700s, Franciscan missionaries arrived in California and set up missions in Los Angeles. By 1781, a group of just 44 settlers from Mexico of European, Native American, and African descent established a pueblo. This pueblo was named El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles (“The Village of the Queen of the Angels”), laying the foundations for the Los Angeles we know today.

While California was previously under rule by Spain, it transferred to Mexico in 1822. Just three decades later after the Mexican-American War, California joined the United States of America. In the years that followed, Los Angeles was in turmoil as crime and racial conflict mired the city. However, by the 1870s, more people started moving to Los Angeles in search of a better climate, and within 30 years the population was booming.

Los Angeles soon became famous for its year-round warm and sunny weather. These blissful conditions also attracted filmmakers in the 1910s, and soon Hollywood became the hub of the film industry in America. Today, Los Angeles is the second most populous city in America, a far cry from its earlier beginnings.

Hollywood Highlights in Los Angeles

Since Hollywood first caught the attention of filmmakers, this neighborhood has become synonymous with glitz and glamor. The home of major film studios, celebrity houses, and cinematic icons, Hollywood is a must-visit for any film buff or culture vulture.

Along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was first established in 1960, you’ll find the names of thousands of actors, musicians, and filmmakers who have all made their mark in cinema and entertainment. If you want to do the full walk, it will take you about 3 to 4 hours! All along the Walk of Fame you’ll also find notable theaters, including the TCL Chinese Theater and the Dolby Theater, where the Academy Awards are held every year.

One of the most popular attractions in Hollywood is Universal Studios, where you can experience incredible thrills on the movie-themed park rides. You can also go on a studio tour for a real behind-the-scenes look at a film set!

In Beverly Hills, you’ll find yourself at the center of celebrity culture. This neighborhood is dotted with mansions, with past residents including Charlie Chaplin, Frank Sinatra, and Walt Disney. More recently, these grand homes have fallen under the ownership of stars like Taylor Swift and Leonardo DiCaprio. While you’re in the area, you won’t want to miss Rodeo Drive — one of the most expensive streets in the world.

For some of the best views of Hollywood and Los Angeles, take a trip along Mulholland Drive. Or if you want the perfect shot of the Hollywood sign, you can either drive or hike up to Griffith Observatory. From here you can even see out to the Pacific Ocean!
