Lake Tahoe’s majestic mountains provide a luscious landscape all year round. Breathe in the crisp morning air and rise with the sun before spending the day exploring the area. If you’d prefer to stay on the shore, rent a bike to ride the paths along the lake’s sandy shores.
For an elevated option, visitors can ride the 2.4-mile gondola to the Heavenly Mountain resort in summer or winter. Here, the whole family can enjoy hiking, tubing, ziplines, and rope courses. From the top, you’ll see vistas of Lake Tahoe, Carson Valley, and the Desolation Wilderness

Lake Tahoe was first inhabited by the Washoe Native Americans and formed the center of their territory, which also included the upper valleys of the Walker, Carson, and Truckee Rivers. Lake Tahoe’s name is a mispronunciation that originates from the Washoe word “dá’aw” meaning “the lake.”
John C. Frémont was the first European-American to see Lake Tahoe on an exploratory expedition during 1844. His discovery led Europeans to impinge further on the land in 1858 when they located the Comstock Lode, a silver deposit just 15 miles (24 km) to the east in Virginia City, Nevada.
This led to extensive logging in the basin for timber to help structure the mines for silver extraction. The logging was so extreme, almost all of the native forest was wiped out. Business boomed as many settlers arrived in the area with industries starting up and thriving. The arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 saw the lake become a popular vacation destination for the wealthy inhabitants of San Francisco, Sacramento, and Virginia City.
Today, South Lake Tahoe is the most populous city in El Dorado County, California, in the Sierra Nevada mountains and on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe. The east end of the city is situated on the California-Nevada state line and is a great destination for tourists with restaurants, hotels, casinos, and the Heavenly Mountain Resort.
One of the reasons that Lake Tahoe trips are so popular is the mild climate that the area experiences. In fact, according to weather reports from the lake’s North and South Official Visitor Bureaus, Lake Tahoe sees sunshine almost 80% of the time!
While we can’t guarantee that all of our Lake Tahoe excursions will be brilliantly warm and sunny, the odds are in your favor. Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen, even in the winter!
That said, the lake’s climate means that the warm, dry summers are complemented by chilly winters later in the season, with regular snowfall making the perfect backdrop for Lake Tahoe tours.
If you’re looking for a winter wonderland escape in the darker months, Incredible Adventures also offers plenty of custom Lake Tahoe trips, so feel free to contact us.
