If you’ve ever dreamed of embarking on a trip to Utah, why not check out our Arches National Park tours from Vegas? Here, you’ll visit the iconic red rock arches in an otherworldly landscape.
This beautiful part of the United States has more than 2,000 natural arches that can be enjoyed across a multitude of trails that feature in many Arches National Park excursions.
Around 65 million years ago, the Arches were in the process of forming. Back then, the area was a dry and vast seabed. Over time, geologic forces impacted the buried sandstone, resulting in fractures that tore through the surface.
The region proceeded to rise over time, extending far beyond the sea level to the elevated structures we know today. Erosion continues to carve these rock formations away alongside rain, which transports the fallen sediment to the Colorado River.
While there are thousands of formations in the park, visitors have claimed a handful of rocks as their favorite ones. On any of our Arches National Park trips, look out for the Delicate Arch. This has become the symbol of Utah and is the most recognizable in the park.
Among other picturesque formations are the Devils Garden, the Double Arch, and Fiery Furnace. The latter is a maze-like structure of narrow passages amongst tall columns. See how many will you find on our Arches National Park excursions.
Arches National Park is located in eastern Utah, north of Moab. In the southeast, the park is bordered by the Colorado River. This famous site contains over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, that tower over the trails through the park.
As you will learn on most Arches National Park tours, humans have occupied this area since the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Until 700 years ago, the Fremont people and Ancestral Puebloans lived in the area.
When Spanish missionaries arrived in the area in 1775, there were Ute and Paiute tribes who already lived there. See if you can find the amazing Ute petroglyphs on your Arches National Park trip!
The first European-Americans who tried to settle in the area were the Mormon Elk Mountain Mission in 1855. They soon abandoned the area due to its inhospitable climate.
In nearby Moab, farmers, prospectors, and ranchers settled in the late 1870s. Soon word traveled of the unusual beauty of the nearby rock formations and a tourist destination was born.
It was only in 1929 that the Arches National Monument was designated as such by President Herbert Hoover. This proclamation was built on the 1906 Antiquities Act, which aimed to protect all natural sandstone formations in the park’s area for scientific and educational value.
There’s never a bad time to embark on any Arches National Park tours from Vegas, Moab, or other surrounding areas. The park is quieter in the winter months, with fewer people visiting and lower temperatures. However, some trails can become slippery with ice and snow.
If the highs of 30 to 50 F and lows of 0 to 20 F don’t appeal, we recommend visiting either in April through May and September through October. In both periods, the daytime temperatures average between 60 to 80 degrees.
