A Brief History of Anchorage, Alaska

The Anchorage we know today was founded in 1914 after Congress approved the construction of the Alaska Railroad from Seward to Fairbanks. The headquarters for construction was settled in an area of modern-day Anchorage. As laborers flocked north from the Lower 48, a tent city duly sprang up here in 1915. As a vital port and railroad hub, Anchorage slowly evolved into Alaska’s largest and most populous city.

However, mere decades earlier, around the time of the 1880 census, only 430 non-natives had made the move to Alaska after its purchase. Today’s Anchorage is located in the traditional homeland of the Dena’ina Athabascan people, who had lived here long before Europeans arrived. What’s more, Russians established a mission across the inlet from where Anchorage stands today. The 1898 Klondike Gold Rush was the catalyst for change. By 1910, the non-Native population stood at 40,000.

Nestled between the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet, Anchorage grew rapidly, thanks in part to its strategic location during World War II and the discovery of oil in nearby Prudhoe Bay in the 1960s. Today, it’s a vibrant city that blends its native Alaskan heritage with modern cultural influences, offering a unique experience for visitors to explore.
