As one of the most iconic wilderness destinations in the US, Yosemite National Park attracts millions of visitors each year. Needless to say, it can get a little crowded, especially in the summer. But while most people flock to the park to see natural treasures such as Half Dome, El Capitan, and Bridalveil Falls, there are plenty of hidden spots in Yosemite waiting to be discovered.
During our Yosemite Tours from San Francisco, the Incredible Adventures team makes sure to include a mix of the most popular attractions and lesser-known landmarks as part of our Yosemite itinerary. If you’re looking to explore Yosemite off the beaten path, we’ve created this guide to the top five hidden gems in Yosemite beyond the valley floor. And should you have any questions about our tours, don’t hesitate to contact us!

Hetch Hetchy Valley: Yosemite’s Quieter Twin
Located in the park’s northwestern corner, Hetch Hetchy provides as spectacular views as Yosemite Valley. It’s even considered a twin to the valley due to its similar appearance. However, it’s far quieter. Many park visitors skip Hetch Hetchy altogether, either due to its location or simply not knowing it exists.
While Hetch Hetchy was dammed in the early 1900s, spurring a massive environmental controversy, it retains classic Yosemite scenery without the crowds. Known for its array of flora and fauna, it’s an excellent hiking location. The trail to Wapama Falls is unmissable, taking you to one of the tallest waterfalls in Yosemite!

Tuolumne Meadows: High-Country Haven
Only accessible when the Tioga Road opens for the summer season, Tuolumne Meadows is one of the most magical spots in Yosemite. Situated at 8,700 feet above sea level, this subalpine meadow is ringed by domes, peaks, and granite ridges.
Located over 50 miles from the Valley, visitor numbers are low here. The air is crisp, the views are expansive, and the mood is tranquil. Day hikes include the Glen Aulin Trail and Lembert Dome, which provides panoramic views within a relatively short climb.
It’s a summer paradise for those in the know, including the Incredible Adventures team. We include it as part of our 5-Day Yosemite Highlights Tour, hiking from the meadows to the glistening Elizabeth Lake!

Cathedral Lakes: Serenity Among the Peaks
Arguably one of the most underrated day hikes in Yosemite, the trail to Cathedral Lakes starts from the Tioga Road near Tuolumne Meadows. After a moderate ascent through pine forest and granite slabs, you’ll reach Lower Cathedral Lake, a beautiful alpine lake backed by the sharp spire of Cathedral Peak. If you’re feeling strong, continue to Upper Cathedral Lake and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The entire hike is approximately nine miles, taking over four hours to complete.
Despite its beauty, Cathedral Lakes gets a fraction of the foot traffic seen on more famous trails, making it the perfect escape for nature lovers and those wanting to get away from it all. If you’ve been feeling stressed out, check out our guide to Reconnecting with Nature on a Yosemite Getaway.

Chilnualna Falls: A Waterfall Without the Crowds
Most people chasing waterfalls in Yosemite go straight for Bridalveil Falls or its eponymous cascades, missing out on the stunning and lesser-known Chilnualna Falls. Located in Wawona in the park’s southern section, the ever-flowing Chilnualna Falls can only be reached on a moderately strenuous yet incredibly rewarding hike.
The eight-mile trail gains over 2,000 feet in elevation, taking you to this series of five cascades. Thanks to its distance from the valley and the relative challenge of getting to the falls, you’ll encounter few other people along the trail. To witness the falls in peak flow, make sure to time your visit for May!
Sentinel Dome: 2 Mile Hike, 360-Degree Views
While the nearby Glacier Point may get all the attention, Sentinel Dome offers breathtaking views with far fewer crowds. This short, 2.2-mile round-trip hike off Glacier Point Road delivers one of the best 360-degree panoramas in all of Yosemite. From the summit, you can see Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and even the High Sierra on a clear day. Plan your visit for sunset, and you’ll be treated to golden hour magic and a much more intimate atmosphere.
Along with Tuolumne Meadows, Sentinel Dome is another high point of our Yosemite Highlights Tour, providing visitors with a uniquely immersive experience far from the crowds of the valley floor.
