Can you believe Yosemite National Park is 125 years old this year? It’s true! October 1 marks the anniversary of Congress’ act that officially protects Yosemite’s natural wonders.

Consider 10,000 years of Native American occupancy, 40 or so years of settling pioneers looking for gold and the conflicts that arose over their coexistence. Add in the early onset of tourists, lodging and residency and you’ve got a pretty good recipe for disaster.

Cue in good ol’ John Muir for the rescue!

Although President Lincoln had already signed a grant that protected Yosemite Valley and the Giant Sequoias in Mariposa Grove in 1864, it was America’s most influential conservationist that persuaded Congress to preserve more than 1,500 square miles of reserved forest lands in 1890. Yosemite National Park as we know it today was only America’s third territory of land to be recognized as a National Park, but it was this series of events that really set the stage for the state and national park system that continues to thrive today!
