On our Muir Woods and Sausalito tour you can wander through the ancient groves of coastal redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument and walk along the quaint sidewalks of Downtown Sausalito. Muir Woods is an example of an old-growth redwood forest located only about 30 minutes from downtown San Francisco. You will have an hour and a half to roam through this ‘living museum’ where you can get a glimpse of the towering trees that used to dominate the west coast from Santa Barbara to Washington.
Sausalito, CAAfter exploring Muir Woods you will get a 15-20 minute narated tour through the beautiful seaside Mediterranean-style town of Sausalito before returning to the city across the Golden Gate Bridge. If you’d like to stay longer in Sausalito, you can hop off the motorcoach in this lovely town and add on a picturesque ferry ride* back to San Francisco!
*tour PLUS FERRY can be booked ahead of time for an additional $11 per passenger. Ferry return is ONLY available for 9am and 11am departures.

Sample Itinerary

8:00am – 9:00am: Pick up from San Francisco hotels
9:00am –  10:00am: The day begins with a drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, which offers sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island, and the skyline of San Francisco. We wind our way through the coastal mountains of the Marin Headlands, along the base of Mt. Tamalpais (the highest point in the North Bay region) on our way to Muir Woods National Monument where you will have 1-1 1/2 hrs to walk around.
10:00am – 11:30am: Arrive at Muir Woods National Monument. The coastal redwood is the tallest tree species in the world. These trees only thrive in Northern California and Oregon, due to the thick fog that blankets the west coast in the summer months. In 1908, Senator William Kent and his wife donated their land to the state and President Theodore Roosevelt designated it as a federally protected area. Muir Woods is the only surviving stand of old-growth forest in the Bay Area. Wandering amongst these towering giants, the sights, sounds and smells of this living museum are sure to reconnect you with a natural world that was almost lost forever.
12:00pm – 12:30pm: From Muir Woods it’s a short drive to Sausalito, a picturesque town that starts with hilltop mansions and spills down to boutique shops and cafes along the waterfront. The pier offers a panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline, the Bay Bridge, and Angel Island. Take it all in with a 20 minute in-coach narrated tour and then loop around for the return trip to San Francisco.
You can also choose to hop off the coach and linger at one of the sidewalk cafes, shop for one-of-a-kind souvenirs, or sample freshly caught seafood before taking the ferry back to the city (choose the PLUS FERRY option at check-out). Ferry is NOT AVAILABLE for afternoon tours.
1:00pm: Arrive back at your hotel

**Sample Itineraries: Please note that due to conditions outside of our control (special events, traffic), it is sometimes necessary to alter your itinerary to best suit the needs of the group. While we guarantee that we’ll do our best to provide you with all of the highlights within this itinerary (conditions permitting), we do not guarantee them in this specific order. **

Take the ferry back to San Francisco* and spend more time exploring Sausalito at your own pace!

Sausalito is located to the north of the Golden Gate Bridge and began as a hub for car, ferry and rail traffic to reach the city. After World War II, its focus on industry shifted and it is now a wealthy and artistic residential and tourist area. Here you will see houseboats, multi-million dollar homes along the cliffs, and many small boutique shops.
You can add the ferry tickets to your tour, and the driver will drop you off before heading back to the city. Simply choose the PLUS FERRY tour option during the check-out process, and the tickets will be provided to you on the tour.
Taking the ferry back from Sausalito will afford you amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco city skyline from the north. Don’t forget your jacket, though – it can get chilly out on the bay! You’ll disembark the ferry in the Fisherman’s Wharf/Embarcadero area where you can easily hail a cab or take the cablecar back to your SF hotel.
*Tickets are an additional $11 for all ages and are not included in the base tour price. Ferry return is ONLY available on 9am and 11am tour departures.

Entertaining and Informative (Muir Woods & Sausalito)

Entertaining and Informative

Our tour took us by bus to Muir Woods & then dropped us off in Sausalito where we caught a ferry back to the City. Our tour guide, John, was both entertaining and informative, which made the trip enjoyable. We were allowed to spend 90 minutes at Muir Woods…enough to wet our appetites to go back in the future… Catching the ferry back to Pier 39 was easy and the ride a treat. I recommend the bus over and ferry back to anyone going to Muir Woods & Sausalito.
