“I may not be a competent judge, but this much I will say, that I have seen purer liquors, better cigars, finer tobacco, truer guns and pistols, larger dirks and bowie knives, and prettier courtesans, here in San Francisco, than any other place I have ever visited; and it is my unbiased opinion that California can and does furnish the best bad things that are attainable in America.” -The Land of Gold: Reality vs. Fiction

We did the Gold N Guns tour in SF with Ryan this week and had a fantastic time. Ryan is a natural storyteller and was funny and patient with our group.
The stories he told were awesome and the drinks were delicious. Great to hear about SF from a local and get to hang out in some fabulous cocktail bars.

Highly recommended. 🙂

Opted for the Gold Rush drinking tour mainly for its convenient timing, that it was a walking tour and that there was a touch of drinking involved. In a word? Fantastic. If you love cocktails (but not getting blind drunk) while learning about some of the seedier history of SF in a relaxed and informal atmosphere then I highly recommend this tour. Our guide (and company owner) Ryan was very knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic. He knows SF like the back of his hand especially the best restaurants, drinking spots and out of the way places for best views of the city. He was also generous with info and ideas about touring elsewhere in the country. We were were a small group of three and he took the trouble to personalise the tour for one of our party who was celebrating her birthday. We visited two bars during the tour to try some unusual craft cocktails - Aventine on Washington St and Comstock Saloon on Columbus, which had an awesome live jazz band playing. My only complaint? It could have been an hour longer! Do support this young and upcoming tour company, you won't regret it.

The Gold Rush tour was absolutely awesome - I can't imagine anybody who wouldn't enjoy this tour immensely.

The stories that Ryan shared were super interesting, from Emperor Norton creating his own currency to the Sydney Ducks and their brief crime-filled reign over the city. There are several areas in North Beach that I have walked by 100x without noticing the details that our guide pointed out. I'll never look at the area the same.

Finally, the bars on the tour were great - I hadn't even heard of 2 of them, and they are definitely spots that I would visit again on my own time, especially Doc's Lab, a new music/comedy venue that opened under Doc Ricketts.
