Muir Woods National Monument Muir Woods is a forest of old-growth Coastal Redwoods located in the Marin Headlands. It is situated in an inaccessibly steep ravine and was therefore spared from the saws of neighboring Mill Valley. Purchased in 1904 by William Kent the land was then donated to the federal government. A few years later Mr. Kent became a US Congressman and introduced the legislation establishing the National Park system. Muir Woods became a national monument (sort of a “mini” national park) and was named after John Muir, a lifelong conversationist and the founding president of the Sierra Club. |
